If they forecast that a majority of the audience for Aion would be shared by those GW2 is targeting, we should have bigger concerns...

I wouldn't say majority... but MMOs are still a niche genre so you got to have all the oomph in marketing that you can. That's why I believe that after we do get GW2 information the whole shebang is going to move so fast we won't have time to really sit there a year out.

Come Dec/Jan I think we will get a trickle of info coming
Aion will be 3 months old by then and The major push for it will have died down a little as most guys will have used it. they will look at subs over the first 3 months and if steady, then it may come some info.
I have Aion and I look forward to G/W2 when it comes to life until then its just time plenty of other games to play until then.
My personal view Aion is so similar to 2Moons /Dekeron...9 dragons
I would be the first person to put my hand up to say as soon as it became public I would pre -order right away

This whole wait ordeal is just to see how much more money NCsoft can squeeze out of people before Aion loses subscriptions to Guild Wars 2 because that is extactly what is going to happen. I'm almost 100% positive if Arenanet shows Guild Wars 2 right now people would be in total awe and forget NCsoft even made Aion.
Arenanet cancelled chapter 4 campaign sometime in mid 2006 and was already beginning the ground work for Guild Wars 2. So they have almost had 3 years of developing Guild Wars 2 and yes there is alot to show but its all about how much money NCsoft can make until Guild Wars 2 depletes a large portion of Aion's funds.

I don't think it was a mistake to announce, just a mistake to have not delivered yet!

Man that is just a big QFT right there. They need to push Aion aside and lets get down to some real business with Guild Wars 2!

Again, how exactly would a game that doesn't actually exist (in terms that you can't play it at all) and is months or even years away steal sibscribers from a newly released and lively mmo?

You can't play a game which hasn't been released (hint: GW2)
So people who need to play now - will play Aion, and the ones who won't if GW2 info is out wouldn't probably play even if no GW2 info released.

Not everyone religiously watches upcoming game releases. People just have to be pushed by cool ads or interesting writeup about it or reached by word of mouth. And those people are majority.
If nscoft wants best ad and hype coverage for Aion, they do not want gw2 hype interference. They want gamer guy tell his friends about new hot Aion where you get angle wings and can fly (and crashland to cactae), not about some GW2 that is not even going to be released for few years.

It is enough of Aion hype already - in MMO fan sphere. As for casual players, if two MMOs are with equal hype, casual player chooses the one which is out already or coming out soon.

1. Aion is really not that good to begin with. It's WoW with prettier graphics.
2. When has Arenanet failed. The last time I checked Guild Wars won a ton of awards and millions have played it. Do you think all of a sudden they are just going to fail out of thin air ? Arenanet team > NCsoft. I know this is kind of subjective but people need to keep the faith in Arenanet despite the long haul of no new information.

It'd be nice to get a gameplay demo video of GW2, I think I once saw Regina say she has played so I imagine there's enough progress to show a gameplay video or something, this would definitively keep the user base interested.
Who knows, we might get something when PAX arrives this September.

Look, I like ArenaNet a lot, but the fact is ArenaNet = NCSoft.
Not only does NCSoft own ArenaNet outright, two founders from Guild Wars (Jeff Strain and Patrick Wyatt) now head up NCWest!
You can't separate ArenaNet from NCSoft, they are the same company.

And WoW was a terrible failure right?
Aion SHOULD be a huge success. The only thing Aion has to really worry about is WoW fanboys who don't want people to leave their game to bash Aion and try to scare fans away. If Aion can establish a community that can overcome that, then I'm sure it will do quite well. If it gets drowned out by "well my friend who plays WoW told me Aion sucks so I think I'll buy WoW instead" then it will fail.

Aion is not really going to attract WoW's audience, as PvE raiders aren't going to find much to like about it. Aion is basically Lineage 2 with wings but with less grind, although still quite a bit more than people are used to in today's MMOs. It is a lot less forgiving, both in PvE (harsher death penalties), PvP (lose abyss points), has a lot more randomness (crafting failures that trash gems in your armor, huge possible damage disparity on some skills), and is far group centric in general, something you'll realize by level 18 or so when all of your quests require grouping. There is both good and bad in this; the harsh environment will drive off a ton of casual players, but it will also make the community tighter, as it is now a lot more important to know who is a retard and who is good and has your back.
The biggest positive I see about this game is that there is nothing cross-server about it, so it will be back to the good old days of knowing your enemies, seeing them every day, and having guild and personal rivalries.
Personally I don't think it's a good game, I think it is a mediocre, generic MMO, with generic classes, generic skills, with a new coat of shiny. If it weren't for the graphics, nobody would give a shit about this game. However, I'm going to play it for a couple of months nonetheless for this reason: a competitive server community in a PvP game can make even a mediocre game really damn fun.

Right now the Aion hype reminds me of the Conan hype. Don't give into the hype and see what happens three months after the release.
Publisher decide (NCSoft) when trailers, video, and screenshots are released and no publisher in their right mind are going to allow two competing properties to be advertised at the same time.
My guess is we will start to see GW2 info about one month after Aion launches. I still hope we see something earlier.
